UK government suspended 39 insulation firms

In January 2025, the UK government suspended 39 insulation firms from participating in government-backed schemes due to substandard installation practices. This action was taken after numerous complaints from homeowners about issues such as inadequate ventilation and exposed insulation, which led to problems like dampness and mold. These deficiencies not only compromised the energy efficiency of homes but also posed health risks to residents.

The affected installations were part of initiatives like the Energy Company Obligation 4 (ECO4) and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), which aimed to enhance energy efficiency in homes across the UK. Approximately 65,000 households had solid wall insulation installed under these programs since 2022. However, routine checks by the quality body TrustMark revealed widespread cases of poor-quality work.

In response, the government mandated that the responsible companies rectify the faulty installations at no additional cost to homeowners. Energy regulator Ofgem has been tasked with overseeing the remediation efforts to ensure swift and effective action. Minister for Energy Consumers, Miatta Fahnbulleh, acknowledged the severity of the issue and assured affected households that steps are being taken to address their concerns.

This incident underscores the importance of stringent oversight and quality assurance in government-funded energy efficiency programs. It also highlights the need for homeowners to be vigilant when selecting contractors for insulation work, ensuring they choose accredited professionals to safeguard their investments and well-being.
